On Saturday evening (January 28) at The Tower Hotel, Waterford City, surrounded by family and friends, Craig Breen was as the Quarter Four, finalist for the ‘Waterford Person of the Year, 2011’. Rally driver, Craig was chosen for his amazing victory of the inaugural FIA WRC Academy. The World Champ who turns 22 on Thursday (2-Feb) was flattered to be recognised, “I’m delighted to receive this award; it’s fantastic to know that the people of Waterford are behind me. I love every minute of my job and being presented with awards for that is especially great. I’d like to thank everyone who nominated me, winning this type of an award is extra special because it shows that motorsport and particularly rallying is becoming more well-known. I’ve received incredible coverage over the passed three years from both the local newspapers and radio, this has proved vital not only to my own P.R. but to the exposure of rallying, which is a minority sport here in Ireland.”

In presenting the award, Tower Hotel Deputy Manager, Catherina Dempsey commented, “We are thrilled to present the award to Craig; he is a fantastic role model and inspiration to everyone. What Craig has achieved so far at just the early stages of his career is really outstanding and richly deserving in commendation and it is clear that through this public nomination process the citizens of Waterford are very proud to claim Craig as a great Waterford ambassador.”

The four finalists of the 2011 Waterford Person of the Year Awards will now go head to head in a public vote for the overall ‘Waterford Person of the Year 2011’ to be announced on February 19 at The Tower Hotel Waterford.

One of Waterford's favourite former County hurlers, Ken McGrath was named quarter one winner of the Waterford Person of the Year Awards 2011. Ken was nominated by the public for his valuable contribution to the game since and his presence as a role model for the young Deise hurlers.

In quarter two Chairman of Waterford Tall Ships Race event Des Whelan was named as the  2011 quarter 2 finalist. Des was nominated by the public for his huge voluntary contribution to the event over the last two years.

Eamonn McEneaney was announced as the Quarter three finalist for the Waterford Person of the Year Awards 2011, Eamon is the Curator of the Waterford Museum of Treasures and Bishops Palace, the key driver of the Viking Triangle and the building of the Viking Long Ship are just some of the many projects Eamonn is behind. Eamonn was nominated through the public voting system for his hard work and dedication to the history of Waterford and to the growth of its tourism sector.

Club Nominations for IVAN WEBB/J.C.MILLARD Trophies

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail
The nominations from the club for the Ivan Webb Memorial Trophy and J.C. Millard Memorial Trophy were required to be submitted to Motorsport Ireland during the past week.

The nominations this year are:

Ivan Webb Memorial Trophy - Ann Fitzgerald

J.C. Millard Memorial Trophy - Shay Power

The Ivan Webb Memorial Trophy: Is awarded annually to “a person, male or female, who in the opinion of the Selection Committee has contributed in a significant way to the support or promotion of Irish Motorsport during the past year or over a number of years."

Carrying out her role as club secretary Ann works day in day out. This is not just over the passed twelve months but longer than a lot of us can remember. Coming home from a days work to face into a few hours of club work is not easy but Ann still shows the drive and determination that makes the club what it is today.

J.C. Millard Memorial Trophy: Is awarded annually to a competitor who has shown a sporting spirit in their involvement in the sport.  It does not look solely at results but also at the manner of participation in the sport, particularly at their help either to other competitors, organisers or the sport in general.
In shay's case if the award was based on results he would be surely in with a shout after clenching the 2011 Triton Showers South East Stages Title in Wexford but this award is not just given on results alone and Shay's sportmanship and work throughtout each year goes on much in character with the man himself. He could be tagged as a gentle giant or the name I like better "The quiet man of Rallying". Shay does not just compete, he's there when help is required for an event or as a sponsor, this years Ravens Rock comes to mind when shay sponsored one of the stages but was also on hand to offer his machinery for a clean up of the service area before the event. The biggest job the Shay carries out each year probably goes unseen to most but for him one our most important events would not go ahead, next March when the Wille Loughman comes around every stone you walk on has been put in place by Shay.
Win or not these are the people that make our club strong, best of luck to both...

Road Safety Week 2011- Oct 10th to Oct 16th

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is urging people nationwide to continue their life-saving behaviour and get involved in the national and local efforts to reduce road deaths. This plea comes as the RSA announced details of their annual ‘drive to save lives’ during ‘Irish Road Safety Week’ which takes place nationwide from Monday 10th October to Sunday 16th October.

To date this year (20th September 2011), 132 people have lost their lives on Irish roads, a reduction of 16 on the same period last year. Of these, almost half (45%) were drivers and 1 in 5 (27 deaths) were pedestrians. Even more worryingly, almost one third of road-users killed (30%) were aged between 16 and 25 years old. However, road fatality statistics to date suggest that, this year, road deaths could fall below 200 for the first time since records began.

Mr Gay Byrne, Chairman, Road Safety Authority said: “Over the past five years, road-users in Ireland have proven just what can be achieved when we all take responsibility for the way we use the roads. And for that, I thank you. Although we have seen further reductions in road deaths this year, we have still lost 132 people in what are preventable tragedies. ‘Irish Road Safety Week’ is a time to reflect on your own behaviour on the roads, think about the improvements you can make to be a better, safer driver and how you can help to save even more lives on our roads.”

A number of road safety activities will take place throughout the country during ‘Irish Road Safety Week’, beginning on Monday 10th October with the RSA’s Annual Lecture on Road Safety in Dublin Castle. This year’s lecture will focus on young drivers aged 17 to 24 years old and will take place from approximately 10:30am to 12:30pm in the Kane Room in the Coach House in Dublin Castle.

Dr Kiran Samra of National University of Ireland, Galway will deliver a lecture on a recent survey he conducted into the Personality, Social Factors, Attitudes and Risky-Driving Behaviour of 17-24 year old drivers. This lecture will be responded to by two speakers – Professor Andrew Tolmie from the Institute of Education University of London who will deliver a presentation on his recent paper for the Department of Transport (UK) on ‘The Development of Children’s and Young People’s Attitudes to Driving’. This will then be followed by a Q&A session . In addition, the following activity will take place around the country:

  • The ‘Check it Fits’ Roadshow which will visit Ballina, Galway, Limerick, Maynooth and Tallaght from Saturday 8th October to Wednesday 12th October. At ‘Check it Fits’ in Galway, Limerick and Tallaght, Advance Pitstop will also offer motorists a free 5 point ‘health check’ for their car including tyres, brakes, shocks, lights/levels and wipers. Information on dates and locations please go to Child safety in Cars section on the website.

National Tyre Safety Day will take place on Tuesday 11th October. This initiative is being run by the Irish Tyre Industry Association to raise awareness of the need to maintain your tyres, particularly coming into the winter months. Free tyre checks will be available nationally at participating tyre centres, along with a free safety pack (while stocks last); Further information is available at www.itia.ie

The Annual ‘Leading Lights in Road Safety’ Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Farmleigh on Wednesday 12th October. These awards honour the efforts made by individuals and groups around the country to promote road safety at national and community level.

The Awards were introduced in 2008 to celebrate the outstanding efforts of people across Ireland to make roads safer for everyone. They provide a special opportunity for members of the public to honour the contribution of exceptional people who promote road safety in their communities. These awards recognise the extraordinary and often ‘unsung’ contributions of people across Ireland to making our roads safer.

The closing date for entries was Friday 16th September and the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Farmleigh House on Wednesday 12th October. The awards will be judged by a prestigious panel including RTÉ Primetime presenter, Miriam O’Callaghan, Editor of the Irish Daily Star, Gerard Colleran, Head of News at Today FM, Cathy Farrell, the Welfare Officer at the Union of Students of Ireland, Chief Fire Officer of Dublin Fire Brigade, Hugh O’Neill and Joe Reynolds, CEO of Reynolds Logistics Ltd.

  • ‘Beep Beep Day!’ is a road safety awareness day which is taking place on Friday 14th October in almost 1,400 pre schools throughout the country to celebrate Irish Road Safety Week. Children aged 5 and under will practise basic road safety messages with the ‘Simon and Friends’ road safety storybooks, songs, games and activities. Information regarding child safety in cars together with an information booklet on "Simon and Friends" is also being distributed to parents. This event is coordinated nationally by the RSA and organised locally by the County and City Childcare Committees nationwide.
  • ‘European Night Without Accident’ will take place on Saturday 15th October in the following counties; Cork, Kildare, Meath, Waterford, Mayo, Leitrim and Donegal. This will be the fifth year that Ireland will participate in this initiative which is happening in 27 European countries in 2011. The initiative is run by young adult volunteers aged between 17 to 29 who encourage each group to choose a “designated driver” who agrees to make a promise: he/she commits themselves to being sober when they sits behind the wheel of their vehicle. When the “designated drivers” leave the nightclub, the volunteers give them the opportunity to undergo a breath analysis to check if they have honoured their commitment.

If you want to make sure your child's safety seat is fitted properly, please stop by our Check It Fits Road Show and have it checked by an expert! We'll be at the following locations:

Saturday, 8th October - Humber Street Car Park - Ballina

Sunday, 9th October - Galway Shopping Centre, Galway

Monday, 10th October - Crescent Shopping Centre, Limerick

Tuesday, 11th October - Tesco, Maynooth

Wednesday, 12 October - The Square Shopping Centre, Tallaght

Craig Breen Wins Sports Star Award

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail
Club member Craig Breen has won the Park Hotel Sports Star Award for the Month of August. Craig scooped the award for his maiden win in the WRC Academy on WRC Rally Germany. Craig will pick up the award at a presentation at the Park Hotel next Tuesday.
.
Craig said on hearing the news, "I'm honoured to be chosen for the Sports Award. It's great to see Rallying getting the notice. On a personal level I and my team put in a lot of effort but Motorsport Clubs up and down the Country work very hard to organise events and it's difficult to compete for exposure with the more traditional sports like GAA, Soccer, Rugby and Golf so to receive this award is great.
